Step into a fairytale at Rawhiti Cave in Golden Bay. The limestone cave was formed over a million years ago and the roof has collapsed to create a huge dome, covered with stalactites and stalagmites. The cave opening is 40m (130ft) wide and 20m (66ft) tall, with a viewing platform located inside. Many of the stalactites curve outwards towards the light, due to the twilight‑zone flora and plants that grow on them.

Getting there: Located 15 minutes drive from Tākaka, follow signage through private property to the cave car park. Leave all farm gates as you found them. The track to the cave is 1 hour long, steep, narrow and muddy in sections. You will also have to cross a small creek - do not attempt to cross after heavy rain as it is dangerous.

Remember: Stay on the path to avoid damaging the fragile environment inside the cave, do not touch any stalactites or stalagmites. This is a unique landscape open to the public, so be respectful and protect it for future visitors, leave no trace.

Personal tip: We visited in summer and it was very hot and humid walking to the cave. I recommend you take plenty of water, and start early to avoid the heat. There were lots of people at the cave after 11am, so set off early if you want to avoid crowds. “Rawhiti” means “sunrise” in Māori, and the winter sun shines to the back of the cave.
