Rotokura, Cable Bay is an iconic beach located 20 minutes out of Nelson, with stunning views of the causeway and a beautiful spot to swim, picnic, hike or relax. It got its name as it was the location of the  first international telegraph cable in New Zealand in 1876. The eastern bay is mud-flats and not recommended for swimming, while the western bay is calm and tranquil on a sunny summer’s day. The beach is a mix of pebbles and sand, perfect for a picnic, swimming or snorkelling.

From the south end of the beach, you can access the Cable Bay walkway, for beautiful views of the surrounding coastline. The walkway is a 14.2km out-and-back trail that takes 3 hours each way. However, you do not need to complete the full track - a short 30 minute steep climb to Sentinel Hill will give you panoramic views of Rotokura and it is a popular photo spot.

Remember: The Cable Bay walkway runs through a working farm. Lambing season is from early August to early October, so take special care when visiting and respect the farm animals.

Personal tip: It’s best to visit at high tide, to see this beautiful location at its best. On a windy day, the wind is channelled through the bay and it is not very pleasant (speaking from experience…)

Pronunciation: Rotokura - roe-toe-koo-raa
