No people, no distractions, just stunning views.
About Wuxuhai
I had the pleasure of working with the local tourism board here a couple of years ago to give some thoughts on the area and I have to say that this hidden gem is the perfect place to unwind and immerse oneself in the serene beauty of nature.
Wuxuhai is a lake in the middle of a mountain range at around 3800 metres of altitude. With the region still in the process of opening up, the lack of signal and the poor roads makes this an empty haven. Walk along the lake accompanied by nothing but yaks with the view
With the area about to be pushed as a nature tourist area, go quick before it becomes popular.
Hiking at Wuxuhai
There are multiple hiking trails around the lake, with some crude maps at the outpost hut there.
That said, they are quite crude so please be careful:
if there are no maps left, then do not hike. The hike goes to high altitude where it is easy to become exhausted and it is dangerous.
If you follow a trail, then make sure you leave the energy to get back down - even if it is turning around.
Bring enough food and water. Extra if possible - especially with the altitude.
Getting to Wuxuhai
I'd love to say there's a easy way to get there but, well, there isn't. The only real way to make it will be to drive - either self driving or to hire a driver.
Staying at Wuxuhai
The town of Jiulong is relatively close and is regularly used as a base from which to explore the lake and it's hiking trails.
Alternatively, the much closer village of Wuxuhai itself, is an option, just be sure to check on trip to make sure they can accomodate you.
